So, New Year’s… Where to

So, New Year’s… Where to start? Oh yeah, I invited everyone I knew and the whole church to come over to see our new house. It took me two days of straight cleaning, not to mention the pre-cleaning, and there was still stuff I missed. Not that anyone noticed.

And the food. You should have seen the food. (Shoot, forgot to take a picture) Anyway, we moved the dining room table into the corner and put all the food on it. We thought about removing the leaves, since we weren’t seating ten, but we left them in. Good thing, too because we filled the table.

There was an auction being held that day too, so Ron left early to check it out. I didn’t see him until 1:30 (a half-hour before people were due to show up), and he brought a couple of surprises with him. I was a little mad at him before, since Emma was fussy and I couldn’t put her down. I had things to do and yeah, I could have called my mother to come over early but I wanted to do it all myself. So I was testy with him, but what he walked in with more than made up for it.

Mom showed up with more food and ready for her station in the kitchen. She kept telling people I wouldn’t let her out of it, so next time, I’ll assign her to hand out towels in the bathroom or something. The other thing was she said right before 2 pm was what if nobody showed up? That wasn’t funny, because where we used to live, I had thrown parties where pretty much no one came. (They were at-home purchasing parties like tupperware, but still…) It’s funny now, though, considering how many people came in the door.

It started out manageable enough. I would get one group greeted and through the house, and another would nicely come in. Then Ron and I would meet each other on the stairs, him going up, me coming down. Eventually, there were presents on the table that I had no idea where they came from. Yeah, people brought presents!

The people behind us came in bearing gifts as well. Peanut brittle for the kids, and homemade wine for us grown-ups. They knew a lot about the house, too. They were told it was built in 1893, and they do know for sure it was built a few years earlier than their house, which was built in 1899. I can’t wait to see their place.

Ron had taken Emma for a little drive since she was cranky, and she fell asleep which is what she needed. She spent most of the party in her car seat in the living room. A lot of people thought she was a doll.

Most people had the same reaction as we did upon entering this house. Speechlessness. One lady didn’t even wait for Ron to talk about each room, since apparently he was spending too much time talking to her husband. She just flew from room to room, exclaiming all the way.

My legs ached from going up and down the 30 steps at least a half-dozen times. No sympathy from Ron, he expects me to be thinned out really well in a year or so. Just from the stairs.

BJ showed up with her family, and stayed after everyone else left. I told mom to leave and not worry about cleaning up the food. We never did have supper, we just nibbled away. I still felt pretty hungry because I hadn’t had a chance to eat much with all the talking and making sure everyone else was comfortable. Over 30 people signed my guestbook, and I know there were a few that didn’t.

I would say it was a raging success. My face hurt from smiling so much. I can’t wait to do it again.
