Poinsettas

This is an entry I have been planning on writing for over 4 weeks. Until 3 Christmases ago, I bought these flowers a week or so before Christmas because I wanted them to last through Christmas. The only person I had ever seen buy the things had always bought them within a few days of Christmas Eve and sometimes on that last moment day. I remember at least a couple times where they were purchased on Boxing Day (back when stores were open here on BD). If they lasted a week looking good then I thought they had done well.

What I did 2 years ago when we closed on this house was buy one for the house we were living in and one for this house. My plan was that I would get more as soon as those dropped off. To my amazement they didn’t. They lasted well into January. Last year, one of the 3 that I bought still looked pretty good on Valentine’s Day. This year, the ones we have now are over 4 weeks old and they look better now than they did when I bought them.

So, I have had some time to think about this whole thing. The person I mentioned in the first paragraph is somewhat of a penny pincher. The things were being bought on that last week because it is when the stores put them on sale as the opportunities to sell them are disappearing. At the same time, the relative humidity in those stores must be near 0. And the plants actually take quite a beating sitting in that dry store for 4 weeks or so. The one that lasted the longest last year was the first one I bought.

What is really running in the back of my mind though is, how stupid is that? I get 2 to 3 months of enjoyment out of them for full price and someone else gets 1 to 2 weeks out of them for half price. And I get the pick of the crop.

Emma funny

(no this isn’t what I remembered I wanted to talk about)

Last night, Emma did not want to go to bed, which is no surprise. She and Daddy were playing on the Playstation when Daddy said it was time for bed and shut it off. He didn’t give her much transistion time, probably because he was tired. So I’m holding her on the bed, cuddling her and stroking her hair while she cried.

“Daddy said bedtime.” Yes, honey, it’s time to go to bed. “Emma sad.” I asked her if she would like me to give her lots of hugs and kisses to feel better, and then we would cuddle under the blankets, have num nums and go to sleep.

She sat straight up in my lap.

“Daddy say no hugs. Daddy say no num nums.”

He did not… but you should have seen her pout, it was the cutest thing. I guess if Daddy said no once, in her mind he must be a big meanie ogre who says no to everything. ;)

Eventually I got her calmed down and she transferred her anger to Meaghan (“Meaghan grabbed my hand and say No. Meaghan mean. Emma sad.”) and then decided she missed the girls. They were at a party, and thankfully, came home about ten minutes after Emma had started crying for them. Again, Emma snuggled in Sarah’s bed for a while before she came back to ours to fall asleep.

darn it

I lay in bed this morning at 7:30 thinking of what to post here. I forgot what it was. It started with, “Yesterday I…”

Eh.

Anyway, today Ron & I are going out to finish up Emma’s shopping and get a couple of last-minute thingys. It struck me yesterday that I think a lot of present-picking is hard for a lot of people because maybe (just maybe) most present fall in the “entertainment” category. Like for the kids, it’s hard to buy them something useful they will enjoy and maybe learn something from. So I think a lot of people (sometimes even me) fall back on a reason like “it’s cool or trendy” or “it loosk nice.” I don’t want to buy someone a present that they are going to put in a yard sale six months form now, ya know? I’d rather get them nothing. And it’s so hard to buy for Emma when she has so many toys already!

We made some photo calendars for the various sets of grandparents adn they turned out really well. It was almost worth the effort of using THREE different programs to make ‘em. I’m sure they will be greatly appreciated though.

Ron and I tried to solve the world’s problems last night. We didn’t get far. We had a great conversation which I may or may not write about, or maybe he will. All I know is that he has the biggest heart full of gold I have ever seen. I love that man.

All I want for Christmas is for my family to have a memorable one.

busy busy

I had a hard time getting to the computer yesterday, and when I did, I either forgot to post and ran out of time, or was busy working on family photo calendars. At least Ron posted last night. :)

We’re busy just finishing up housework for the holidays, and I am making the girls clean their room really well and get rid of the junk. You see, with all the dinners we had, we got in the groove of having the downstairs clean every couple of days.

The upstairs? Oh my Lord, it’s bad. Everything downstairs we didn’t have a spot for went upstairs. Other than bringing laundry downstairs, we neglected it. And it has to be clean in time for New Year’s and our annual party.

We went and got videos on Friday night, as usual, and when Emma put hers on the counter, she said, “I gots a DVD.” Everything with her is a DVD and we don’t even have a player! She also thinks the Disney video logo says “DVD”. So she says this to the clerk, and she tells him it’ll cost us $50 (what else?) so he drops his jaw and declares her the cutest kid *ever*. No duh. Then he lets us use up 3 coupons and we got four movies for $1.79. It pays to bring her.

We had more running around to do, and with all the kids in the car, I somehow said something to Ron about gettin’ some, thinking they can’t hear me. Well. Sarah’s in the back saying how she doesn’t need to hear this, Meaghan is staring really hard out the window rolling her eyes, and Addison is saying, “Mooooooom!”

I turn my head. “What?” I ask them, in a mood to tease, “It’s not like we do it more than once a year.” Ron is starting to have trouble driving because he’s laughing so hard. Meaghan sighs even deeper and curls up in her coat, sticking her fingers in her ears. Sarah starts to make incoherent noises and shakes all over. Her eyes roll up in the back of her head. Addison advises her, “Find your happy place! Sarah, find your happy place!”

I can’t wait till they get married.
