world history

We have been using the Greenleaf Guides for some of our history, but what can I use after that? They only go up to the end of the Reformation. We really like the layout & format, how it focuses on people instead of dates & events.

I want something that will give me a general overveiw of world history after that. Everything I can find that is close to what I want just deals with American history.

(Don’t even try looking for high school level Canadian history in an interesting personal format with a classical bent. Oi.)

Smart kid

Sarah signed up for, and filled in, her own Amazon wish list. I find her selection of books amusing. 🙂

outlining plans for middle & high school

Part of what I’ve been doing these last few days is setting down long-term plans on paper.

(Paper! Real paper and not virtual!) I need to write down a full outline of what Addison has done, partly to get it straight in my own head, partly to better organize it for a portfolio for college, and partly to make my job easier when the girls get to high school.

When I’m all done sorting out what they did and what they will do, I’m putting in all in a spreadsheet (or maybe a database if need be) and I’ll see about making it available online. Big thing I learned was to keep better track of what I was doing and better notes.

At the time, I was thinking all I needed to do, even for a “just in case”, was to keep their work for a few years. Turns out (DOH!) that I’m running into problems (just with me) trying to remember what one kid did in a certain grade so the next kid can do the same thing. No sense in reinventing the wheel! For the girls, it mostly involves meeting them where they are, and pacing things so they will be where I want them in a few years.

It is also helping me figure out how we want to approach things in the long run with Emma.

I have to stop typing now or I will veer way off topic. 🙂 I’ll save that for another post.

Small things

At one point yesterday afternoon, I could no longer hold myself upright and curled into a ball on the couch. “Mommy, you feel yucky?” a small voice said somewhere above my head.

“Mommy is sick. Mommy needs to sleep. If Emma needs anything, one of the big kids will get it.”

Whispering now, “O-tay Mommy.”

I hover in the fuzzies for a few minutes.

“Mommy?” the vioce is soft and quiet. I open one eye. Emma is standing before me, serious look on her face, a spoon in one hand and the medicine bottle from on top of the fridge in the other. “Mommy, I brought you medcine make you feel all better.”

site link & message board

I was poking around the Donna Young homeschooling site (which is pretty good anyway) and found they now have a message board. WAY more categories are available once you register.

See why I haven’t been blogging much? 😉
