One of the most fascinating parts of having a toddler, is watching how her mind works. I catch her, sometimes, off by herself, talking and playing. Two fingers on one hand make legs to a little person that she’s walking all over the couch. She makes the voice high or low, depending on if they are a Mommy or Daddy. She’ll make jokes with herself and her finger people and laugh.
Emma likes to play kitty. She’s a kitty a good chunk of the day, meowing and rubbing up against our legs. It’s “meow!†for yes and “meow!†for no. She tries to eat her lunch with her face and licks her hand. She meows at Ron when he comes home. He tells her, “Can I talk to Emma now?â€
She makes crafts, or “cwaafftss†as she calls them. She’ll sit at her desk for ages, pink safety scissors in hand and tongue stuck out the corner of her mouth, construction paper confetti all over. At some point, a glue stick will appear to stick together all kinds of things, including to Emma herself. Later, she will show me what she “madeâ€. I’m always impressed.
Sometimes I’ll ask her what she’s thinking. Sometimes I get an answer back. Long, involved and hard to follow, it’s always some non-sensical but ultimately funny story that makes sense only to her.
I watched her, the other night, while she ate some teddy grahams newly brought home from the grocery store. She was holding them up and making them talk in high-pitched voices. I listened in.
“Don’t eat me! Don’t eat me!†the teddy squealed.
CRUNCH. Emma bites off the head.
“Mmm,†she says with a smile to the teddy body, “You taste good.â€
Awww. I love that stage of imagination.
Is Emma 3? Because my daughter Molly, acts like a kitty too! LOL It was quite amusing to read about it… the whole thing was exactly like I was reading about my little girl! Must be the age?
I have a 2 1/2 year old kitty AND a 5 1/2 year old Scooby dog. We play fetch, and they love to lap water from bowls on the floor. Happens every day. I remember when my brother used to do it day in and day out. It was annoying back then.
Aww.
I can’t wait for that stage.
Hee hee my 3 year old kitty talks to her goldfish crackers the same way!
