the continuing adventures of us

Conversations

Ron and I are eating lunch and having an intense conversation in the dining room, about the flaws in the educational system an how there are similar ones in the church. Emma comes along, set her bowl on the table, starts to eat and watches us.

“What are you talking about?” she asks after a few minutes.

Not wanting to explain things she doesn’t even begin to understand (and that I barely grasp), I say, “Grownup stuff.”

“Oh.” she says after another bite. “Little kids talk about little kid things with little words. Grown-ups talk about grown-up things with big words.”

Ron and I look at one another. “Amazing,” he says, shaking his head. “Just amazing.”

Ron and I are talking (again) but this time on my Mom’s back deck with Mom and Carl. My mother looks over at my husband, dressed in black jeans, a black fitted t-shirt and black motorcycle shoes, and tells him he looks very nice today.

“Yeah,” I say, “Doesn’t he look hot?”

Nobody moves as the reality of what I just said, and to whom, sinks in. Mom and I cover our eyes and ears and start yelling at the same time.

“Don’t answer that!” I tell her.

“Oh, gross!” she says.

The men just laugh and shake their heads.
