How to watch a movie in our house

This weekend we bought the Spongebob movie. (Seriously, do you even need a link for that?) While I was in the store, keeping the children busy at THE MALL on a SATURDAY, while the husband got to stay home and do FUN STUFF like TAXES, we decided to buy a new movie.

Partly because Addison jumped up and down in the aisle, going, “Can we buy it? Can we? Huh? Can we?” I did have a bit of a time finding it, because there were oodles of VHS about to go on clearance, even brand new, but couldn’t find the DVD. Eventually, I found it on a bottom shelf. I hate the way the store is laid out.. Anyway, Emma takes one look and after the initial exclamation asks me, “Is dere a commentary of da movie on dere? I wanna see da commentary.”
So then we decide if we’re going to go back home and sequester ourselves in the living room with a movie, we need snacks. I buy $12 worth of snacks. Ouch.

We get back home, Ron dug his head out of papers long enough to oohh and ahh over our purchases and we dig out the snacks. I pour a big bowl and by the time I get to the living room discover only one child left. The two girls had taken their own bowls. Addison had dissapeared. Emma was pressing buttons on the remote trying to get to the special features.

Then Ron stuck his head around the corner and asked me to help him. Later, after the movie spun around for the fourth time that afternoon, people actually sit down to watch it. Or some of it. Sarah watches for 15 excited minutes, then declares she needs to phone Becky. Emma says we need to watch the storyboards because they are the best part. Addison comes downstairs, look at the screen, says “this part is awesome!” Then he goes to forage for food in the kitchen. Spongebob says he was employee of the month for 374 consecutive months, so he just *has* to get the manager’s job, and Ron notes that is 32 years.

I sigh and eat more chips. From the big bowl they left me.

I don’t think I’ve seen a movie from start to finish since I became a mom!

The saddest part in this tale of woe is that we went and saw this in the theater. Somewhere in the middle, I took Emma to the bathroom and missed the bit between “Now that we’re men” and the diver taking them.

I still haven’t seen that part!
