Living in a historic home

One of the things I forgot to mention is the city’s heritage officer dropped by this week with some papers for us to sign, if we so wished. This gave her permission to look up and document the history of our house, and also to include it on various websites realted to listing historical sites of significance. The one for our city isn’t quite done yet, and we will also be up for recommendation for the national site.

What does this mean in real terms? Not much, really. We won’t be under any legal restrictions on what work is done to the house and we may one day be eligible for conservation funding, so mostly it’s an honorarium. In other words, being able to say we officially live in an old house.

Part of the reason we jumped at the chance was to make sure the house is preserved for furture generations. Many old homes in the area are falling down, abandoned, renovated beyond recognition, slapped over with vinyl siding, or sold off for pennies – especially compared to the new monstrosities in the subdivisions. We don’t want to see that happen to this house.

There’s a picture of a nice old house in the gallery. I wonder who lives there? ;)

Long-time readers may remember back here when we showed the same historic officer around the house and grounds. Oh wow, that was like nine or ten months ago. The government sure moves fast on this one. I guess they figure old homes aren’t going anywhere.
