WordPress tip: bookmarklets

When using WordPress as you blog publishing platform of choice, there a couple of handy quick features for writing posts AND for adding links to the ever-important blogroll.

In the Write Post area, scroll way down to the bottom of the page. There’s a link there to right-click and add to your favorites. I added mine to my toolbar, that way when I am surfing and find a great link, I can click on the “Press it!” link on my toolbar, up pops a little Write window. I fill in a quick blurb, hit the button – and my blog is updated, all while still surfing.

Same think with Links. Let me point it out if you didn’t know, that a list of links on your sidebar is called a blogroll, after the popular Blogrolling service. WordPress has one integrated that is much easier to use and doesn’t take a kajillion years to load. Plus you can have multiple categories of links.

Anyway. It has a Bookmarklet too. Go to the Add Link sub-menu and scroll way down to the bottom again. There’s a link there that this time you can drag to your toolbar. Now when you’re on an awesome site you want to add to your links list/blogroll on your sidebar, click the button, up pops the window again and better yet – the fields are all filled in. All you have to do is click Update.

Like I said, weird stuff just happens

So Monday afternoon there’s a know on my door, and the guy standing there askes me about the “House for sale by owner” sign on the telephone pole on the corner, because he’s been up and down our street and can’t find a house for sale so would it be ours?

I posit that maybe the address on the sign wore off and give vague directions to where I thought it might be, and add that he should give us six months and our house may be on the market as well.

“REALLY? How much?”

I tell him, list features. He looks… not exactly interested, more stunned and thoughtful. As he leaves, I wave to his wife in the car. There’s a baby seat in the back. Who knows?

Yesterday, Sarah called from work to say I could come get her in a few minutes and by the way I’d never believe what just happened. The CD store manager was in for a sub and asked her specifically what she was doing in September, and then told her he was losing three employees and that she should drop off her resume. Seeing as she’s in there so often and all.

After we got home, Sarah brushed up her resume and got my mom & Carl to print it off for her because our printer – well, let’s just not talk about the state of our printers. They brought it down and Mom visited with us and her beloved Royal Highness Princess Emma while Carl lugged Sarah back down to the mall.

Did I ever mention what a great guy Carl is? (Also, back on Monday, Carl took Addison down to Saint John, where he did, in fact, find a place to live. He then went for more college registration, got a student ID card, a list of books to buy, another payment schedule, and an interesting conversation about why he didn’t have a transcript of marks. He didn’t need one, he was pre-approved.)

Anyway, Sarah had a mini-interview on the spot with the CD store manager as he read over her resume. “So you’re homeschooled, right?” Yeah. “So you’ve got a pretty flexible schedule then?” Smart guy. He’ll call to set up a formal interview later.

She’s positively beaming.

The Boss is back in the blogosphere

In case you missed it, Jay at the Zero Boss is blogging again, and this time – you can read his book on his blog. There’s a severe potty-mouth warning attached to his site though, but he does homeschool. ;) Check those stereotypes at the door…

New categories to come

Even though there have been complaints I don’t use categories enough, I’m adding a couple more:
- music
- WordPress (including WP tips)
- pop culture

Also, I renamed my General category to ‘I forgot to pick a category’ because that’s what Ron always says. (“You forgot to pick a category again…”)

I really must have lunch and paint the trim in the bedroom.
