Im my internet wanderings, I found out today is the second annual international sunflower guerrilla day. What does that mean? Well, in a nutshell:
- find some abandoned urban land.
- plant some sunflower seeds.
- keep it watered and weeded until the plant(s) are on their own.
- stand back and smile.
I love this idea so much, even though I live in the land of endless green (or endless white if you’re here in winter). There’s a field down the road from here that was nothing but sunflowers for acres and I didn’t get a picture. I will this year, even if I have to drive down there myself on a special trip.

Funny, yesterday as I was listening to a podcast of Sage’s mom talking about gardening, I got inspired about doing the same thing here – spreading sunflower seeds along my bike route. I think it is still a little too early to plant yet though. Heck, it snowed yesterday.
In Toronto, Paul and I have participated in guerilla gardening, helping transform a vacant streetcorner into a garden. It was great fun and were I to be there much this summer I’d definitely be up for it again.
Guerilla gardening! I LOVE it.
