Here, for your Internet perusal, is MILK. In a BAG.
Why? Well, it probably takes up a bit less space in shipping. There’s definitely less waste, too . Recycling the plastic is easy – so is re-using the bags. Just slit open the top, wash and use. Sometimes they are used as freezer bags, as the plastic is quite sturdy, but there’s at least three people reading that would be right chuffed to hear the bags perfectly hold a sewing pattern.
The other reason is economy – sometimes it’s cheaper to buy it this way. Also, there’s only 1.333 liters open at once, so a smaller amount than 4L (or a gallon) to get spoiled or spilled.
You know, we’ve always bought milk this way, so I did have to think a bit for the “why”s other than that.
Bagged milk: available in Central & Eastern Canada and parts of Wisconsin.

My aunt lives in Minnesota and they had bagged milk there when I was a kid, not sure if they still do.

My Mum used them for freezing things. Take a look at this link! http://www.norwichgazette.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1172932
I think it’s odd that more places don’t use it — seems to make much more sense than the jugs. Do they make gallon sizes as well?
