My cat and I have a couple of things in common………. middle age spread and allergies. We differ in that I love my husband, while Porsche tolerates him. He is simply an extra thumb in the event I’m not home to open the cat food.
A while back I noticed that Porsche sneezed a lot, especially when doing her business in the litter box.  At the time we used a brand name clay based scoopable kitty litter.Â
After a bit of research, I realized the clumpable kitty litter was doing her more harm than good. Commercial kitty litter contains clay and silica.   Not only is the mining of clay hard on the environment, the dumping of commercial kitty litter adds to landfills as it is not biodegradable.  Living in a small town limits my shopping resources, but I was able to purchase one bag of Swheat Scoop. It is compostable, biodegradable and made from 100% ground wheat. The starch in the wheat makes it clump and the wheat enzymes neutralizes the odor.   When wet, it smells just like oatmeal. At $28.00 for 11 kgs I found Swheat Scoop expensive. Â
I noticed a change in Porsche almost immediately. She no longer sneezed.   My dear husband remarked that it looked a lot like cracked wheat. The listed ingredients were wheat, and a soy based oil to limit dust.  Â
We found cracked wheat at the bulk barn.  The first time I purchased 2 kg to test.  Porsche did not mind the less expensive no name brand of wheat kitty litter . After speaking with the manager and explaining what I was using it for, he agreed to sell it to us in bulk.  We now buy a 20 kg bag for $32.00.
I simply flush the lumps and sprinkle the used litter on the flower beds.
Today’s pick is Porsche’s favourite heart song – My heart belongs to Daddy
I switched to corn cat litter last fall. My roommate started the trend in our house last spring or summer and found it was wonderful. I started with a wheat one but found it didn’t clump well, so I went on to corn and actually love it. When I was going through a cheap phase in October I bought the clay stuff again, and was blown away by the difference. So, back to corn I went. The odor neutralization is amazing, isn’t it? I will NEVER go back to clay litter!
Wow. This is GREAT information about kitty litter. We’ve been using clay litter for years for our two cats, and it really smells! I’m all about helping the environment, so I’ll be checking out the wheat and corn options. Thanks for sharing!
Wandering Coyote. the odor neutralization is amazing. I find the wheat clumps a bit at the bottom of the box, but nothing hot water won’t remove.
Kimberly glad you found the information helpful. Nothing only is it good for the enviroment, it helps your cats too! In my house, the kitty’s happiest and health comes first!
