a penny for your thoughts

or should I say nickel for your thoughts? Today the Royal Canadian Mint will cease distributing pennies.

Growing up in the fifties, a penny was big money.   I could buy my fair share of treats at the local corner store with one penny.  Three banana candies, or 3 licorice babies or three spearmint leaves. All children knew the value of a penny.  Add a second penny and you had a grab bag, two cents worth of candy that the grocer grabbed off the shelf.  For the grocer it was a easy way to get the kid in and out of the store, no hmming or hawing, no leaning against the counter deciding what candy to buy.  For the kid, it was the element of surprise and a candy or two extra thrown in for good measures. Enough candy to share with your sister or friends.

The Red Cross helped the starving children in Africa with their yearly penny drives at our local school.

And when you wore your first pair of penny loafers with a brand new penny insert, you knew you were grown up.

Back then day dreams and ideas came cheap too, as in a ” penny for your thoughts”

Finding a penny on the side walk meant an angel was thinking of you.

Pennies from Heaven

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground
But it’s not just a penny
This little coin I’ve found
Found pennies come from heaven
That’s what my Grandpa told me
He said Angels toss them down
Oh how I loved that story

He said when an angel misses you
They toss a penny down
Sometimes just to cheer you up
To make a smile out of a frown

So don’t pass by that penny
When you’re feeling blue
It may be a Penny from Heaven
That an Angel’s tossed to you

When I had penny loafers, I had two 1953 pennies in them for my birth year. The shoes have long since gone but I still have the pennies. I wonder how much they’re worth?!

Pennies from the year we were born…….priceless…….just like the two of us
