Big trucks and loaders

This past Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. the big truck parked beside our driveway to deliver our new log home.   After years of planning and dreaming, it is hard to believe that the day is finally here.

We have been blessed to find a quiet, gentle contractor (back hoe guy) who works slowly methodically, and carefully.  No accidents, no problems bringing the pallets of logs, spikes, roofing material and miscellaneous items from the highway to the top of the house.

The windows and doors arrive next week.

DH is loving every minute of this, even when his stress level is through the roof!

This picture reminds me of Wall-E moving his compacted parcels around his work area.

Panoramic view

DH and I are both at home in the apartment with the kitty.  We have traveled all week again.  Check out my blog header.  DH took a panoramic view from our soon to be living room area (weather permitting).   By keeping our eye on this prize, it makes the travel worth it.  More pictures to follow to show how much has been accomplished this week.

It’s raining men

Work on the home site was very slow last week, in fact some days it was just a drizzle.   The east coast was under a heavy rain front.  Luckily when the rain stopped for a bit and the sun tried to break through, the workers managed to get quite a bit done.

We had about one full day in total of reasonable weather.  The weekend was a washout with more rain and below seasonal temperatures.  As DH braved the elements in the travel trailer, I spent the week traveling the province.

Keeping our fingers crossed for better weather soon.  Check out more photos on our flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/61967910@N03/

Happy Mother’s Day

“Making a decision to have a child — it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”- Elizabeth Stone

This is the first Mother’s Day that my son is living in another province. Last week JD and his lovely girlfriend Tiffany moved to Alberta. For years he avoided the lure of going West to make the big bucks.   It seems Tiffany is the ONE   He wants to pay off his student loans and save the down payment on a house.

He still needs his Mom though. I received a frantic call the other night, “Mom, I need my birth certificate to register out here and I can’t find it.” A few clicks of the computer later and his documents were being expedited by courier.

This is the first Mother’s Day that we are building a house. Construction is coming along nicely, the foundation was poured two days ago. For Christmas Andrea, Ron and the grandchildren gave me a calendar which they drew a picture to represent each month. I love Ron’s construction drawing for the month of May.

DH and I spent most of the weekend packing. It went so well, that he muttered, “Wouldn’t you know it, our last move, and we finally figured our how to do it,”

DH noticed someone moving into the complex. He introduced himself and managed to get dibs on all of their moving boxes, including four large wardrobe boxes. This gift of moving boxes saved me numerous trips to the liquor store, trying to nabs boxes on delivery day.  Who knew cardboard was such a commodity?  DH purchased a box of 100 foam sheets at Staples, to layer between china dishes. They work so well, he didn’t comment on the amount of dishes and knick-knacks we had to pack.

We are spending a quiet day at home.  Tomorrow DH moves into a trailer on the property and I begin my weekly travels.    This afternoon my grandson, and his family will drop in for a visit.

My life is truly blessed. I hope your Mother’s Day is perfect and filled with blessings.

A picture is easier than a thousand words

Just when you thought it was safe to ask about how the house is coming along……………..
I’ve created a flickr account to post pictures of the construction.

The dozer guys are still working on the driveway, hauling in loads of gravel. Next week the footings will be poured.

Life is full lately. Not only are we building a home, I’ll be working in Moncton three days a week beginning Tuesday.

Today is a BIG day

My one and only great grand-daughter, her Royal Highness Princess Isabella (aka Izzy) turns one year old today!   Happy birthday little one.

And…………..drum roll please………

Today after years of planning, dreaming, and boring our friends to death with the details, the sub contractor broke ground for our new home.    The project was scheduled to start a week ago, but Mother Nature brought a snow storm instead.    This morning she brought fierce rain showers with a bit of blue sky on the horizon.  The high ho driver had enough faith to start the drive way.

DH spent the day with the crew; calling to give me updates.   We thought the soil would be rocky, since there are are few major piles of stones scattered here and there.   But lo and behold, the first sweep with the dirt digger (can’t remember what it is really called) revealed beautiful top soil.   No one gets excited about good dirt like my DH.

Due to the grade of the land, the house will sit back further up the hill then we first thought.   For family who have tramped the ground with us,  our home will be almost on the site of the old farm-house foundation where the daylilies grow.    The high-ho driver gently moved a patch of lilies for us to transplant.

The new site gives us a better view of the bay.   The only downside is the three trees on the spot,  had to be removed, but the ancient apple tree is okay.

The dirt digger guy told DH that the property will look a lot worse before it looks better, as he will dig out the foundation, the road, the septic field, numerous ditches and a few berms.

To me it looks perfect.  Here’s the engineer’s drawing of the home we are building.

Oops I did it again!

A couple of weeks ago, I fell off the wagon and purchased more fabric.  The local thrift store sells grab bags of fabric for $3.00.   Just my luck that 3 different bags would have fabric that I just had to have……..or at least buy for my daughter.

I knew my daughter would especially like this one.

The bags were over flowing with a hodge podge of different fabric including cotton, denim, twill…..what ever they have on hand.

After sorting through the bags and taking out the fabric suitable for quilting, I was left with a bag of twill and denim.  This bag was dropped off at the local Salvation Army thrift store, for some one else to oooh and aaah over.

For a total of $9.00 plus provinical sales tax I was the proud owner of 16 new pieces of fabric ranging in size from a fat quarter to 2 yards.   The majority of the pieces are 1 yard and larger.   Being the good mother that I am, most of the fabric went to my daughter.

This is her latest creation using the thrift store fabric.

The cost of the pattern  $15.00.

The cost to make my daughter happy………priceless.

(Do you think she might me a wallet now?)

I’m a winner!

If you were view my bookmarks you would find mostly recipes. And the majority of those recipes would book marked from My English Kitchen or A Year From Oak Cottage. Both of these blogs are the work of Marie Rayner.   A transplanted Maritimer now living in Chester, England with her British husband Todd and their puppy Mitzie.   Once you start following her blog daily, it is like reading emails from an old friend.

Not only is Marie an incredible busy cook often posting two recipes a day, she also manages to write 2 other blogs and an Esty shop. She is also an artist with her prints available here .  I’m lucky to find the time to squeeze in one blog.

From Traditional Victorian Sandwich Cakes to Taco Tarts, each recipe is well written and beautifully photographed.

When Marie sponsored a give away a while back, I entered, never thinking for a moment I might win.   But I did.   I am now the proud owner of a proper scale, a delicious cup cake cook book,  cup cake liners, sprinkles and decorations.

With Easter just around the corner, and a visit to the grand-children’s, the timing is perfect.

Maxine at Tim Horton’s

I was in Timmy’s recently when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to fart.
The music was really, really loud, so I timed my fart with the beat of the music.

After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee,
and noticed that everybody was staring at me….

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.

…and how was your day?

Another good one compliments of my old buddy Tim
